NEW YORK, NY (May 2, 2013) — Cosmopolitan magazine editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group chairman Bonnie Hammer and co-executive editor of tech and media website AllThingsD.com Kara Swisher were just a few of the seven high-profile media and communications leaders honored at the 2013 Matrix Awards, held on Monday, April 22nd at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. More than 1,100 guests gathered for the gala awards luncheon hosted by New York Women in Communications, Inc. (NYWICI), with event management and media relations provided by Kellen Company. The Matrix Awards celebrate the success of exceptional professional women from throughout the communications disciplines.
“It is always an honor to be a part of this event, as the women who are recognized as pioneering leaders in their fields are an inspiration to everyone who comes,” said Maria Ungaro, executive director, NYWICI. “To see the winners gathered with the NYWICI Foundation Scholarship recipients truly drives home the impact that New York Women in Communications has on generations of women in media and communications.”
In addition to her NYWICI executive director role, Ungaro is a vice president at Kellen Company, which manages NYWICI and has helped produce the Matrix awards for the past two decades. She managed the Matrix event team and oversaw all event logistics. Kellen’s role included pre-show planning, event marketing and promotion, on-site event operations management, VIP handling and public relations.
In particular, one of the key responsibilities was managing registration for the more than 1,000 attendees. In addition to a traditional front desk check-in, Kellen Communications created a “text check-in” capability which enabled guests to skip the registration line and seamlessly receive their seating assignment on their mobile phone as a text message.
Legendary television personality and comedienne Joan Rivers served as mistress of ceremonies for the event and led the guests in honoring the winners. The 2013 Matrix Award winners joining Rivers on the dais included Joanna Coles, Editor-in-Chief, Cosmopolitan magazine; Anne Finucane, Global Strategy and Marketing Officer, Bank of America; Mindy Grossman, Chief Executive Officer, HSN, Inc.; Bonnie Hammer, Chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Group; Jacki Kelley, CEO North America & President Global Clients, IPG Mediabrands; Audra McDonald, Tony-Award winning Broadway actress; and Kara Swisher, editor, reporter and author. The presenters for the honorees included Christine C. Quinn, Speaker of the New York City Council and Mayoral candidate; American Idol host and media entrepreneur Ryan Seacrest; Barry Diller, Chairman and Senior Executive of leading media and internet company IAC and Chairman and Senior Executive, Expedia, Inc.; and Mika Brzezinski, Co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Organizing this high-profile and star-studded event required significant personnel resources, according to Ungaro, who noted that NYWICI members volunteer to assist in many critical roles.
“The NYWICI volunteers who contributed to Matrix this year are a pleasure to work with and our success would not have been possible without them,” said Ungaro. “From the scholarship winners to the guests and award winners, everyone who attends Matrix leaves with a renewed passion for the media and communications industry, and I am so proud that Kellen helps make that happen.”
