Associations are as important as ever, and in 2012, we got the proof and the recognition that our industry deserves! A study released by ASAE – the Center for Association Leadership, found that associations have a measurable impact on the nation – both economically and socially.
The Associations Matter study was released in support of ASAE’s legislative Lobby Day in 2012, and relied on U.S. government statistics and tax-exempt forms to measure the benefits and effects of associations on society overall. The study found that associations have a profound impact in the U.S., and their role continues to evolve and produce positive results for a seemingly never-ending list of industries and needs. Some of the highlights of the report included:
- 92,331 trade and professional associations are recognized by the IRS (2010), and statistics show that this is growing at a rapid pace!
- The number of trade and professional associations and charitable organizations has increased 3.4 percent over the past 10 years
- The meetings industry supports 1.7 million jobs and accounts for $263 billion in spending
- Of the 63 million people who volunteered in the U.S. between September 2009 and September 2010, more than 18 million volunteered through a membership organization
So, what does this mean for you, Kellen Company and our clients? It means that the association industry continues to thrive, and here we are – right smack dab in the middle of it! The study listed Washington, DC, Chicago, and New York City as the top three metropolitan areas in the U.S. with the largest concentration of trade and professional associations – it’s no mistake that these are three of Kellen’s office locations!
If you’re working at or volunteering for an association, it’s clear that your work is having an effect on something bigger than just your members! Keep up the good work – here’s to a prosperous 2013!
