It can be be hard for working professionals (ourselves included) to find the time for continued professional development. This is especially true for your volunteer Board members who are already giving up a lot of their time for their association. But professional development is a key factor in operating your Board in the most effective and efficient manner! So what can you do to ensure that your Board members are getting the professional development that they need?
Make professional training and development a part of each existing (and incoming) Board member’s mindset – make sure they understand the importance of this time, and make it clear that they will be expected to participate as part of their role as a Board member. Take a few hours or a full meeting during an already scheduled Board meeting or teleconference and have someone come in to train the Board. Taking the time to build these trainings on everything from time management to media training to industry specific issues will make your Board – and the people it consists of – stronger.
