When you elect new members to the Board, make sure to provide a comprehensive Board orientation to introduce them to their new position. Even if they have been long time members or involved on committees, it’s important to remind them of their responsibilities as a new Board member. Don’t forget to review the following:
- Association bylaws
- Board policy manuals
- Antitrust laws and how to comply
- Fiduciary responsibility of Board members
- The Association’s financial position and annual budget
- How Board Meetings are conducted
Taking a quick hour to review on the phone after they are elected will help to answer a lot of questions they may not have realized they even had!
Bonus tip: Include current Board members for a refresher course, too!
